    In this Radio New Zealand podcast, two Otago University students draw from their own experiences to discuss the notion of inclusive education and consider the advantages and disadvantages of mainstreaming and special schools. Their lecturer, Gill Rutherford, then talks about her thesis on the experiences of students with disabilities and their teacher aides.

    Gill's thesis brings out the critical nature of the relationship between student and aide, showing that teacher aides can be both a barrier to and a resource for inclusion.

    New Zealand Autism Spectrum Disorder Guideline

    The New Zealand Autism Spectrum Guideline is a set of nationally consistent standards of practice for the assessment, diagnosis, and support of people with ASD. It includes specific recommendations on:

    • education
    • living in the community
    • support for individuals, families and carers
    • professional development
    • Māori and Pasifika issues.

    Other helpful features include an extensive glossary, an appendix on core elements of effective teaching of individuals with ASD, and an appendix on educational interventions that are currently being used in New Zealand.

    The Guideline is a world first in addressing ASD and its impact over an individual’s lifetime. Both its attention to the evidence and the way it has been developed (in consultation and collaboration with a wide range of experts and stakeholder groups) make it a reliable source of guidance for practice. The website includes a range of more accessible supporting material, including a summary, a video and tutorial entitled “What Does ASD Look Like?”, and an FAQ section. This is a core resource for schools wishing to improve their provision for students with ASD.

    Ki te Aoturoa: Improving Inservice Teacher Educator Learning and Practice

    Ki te Aoturoa is a set of learning materials that is designed to support leaders of educational learning to learn and improve so that they can support the learning of others, with the ultimate goal of improved outcomes for students. The materials emphasise a collaborative process in which each person is treated with respect while their knowledge, values, beliefs, and practices are considered and critiqued.

    You may find the following sections of particular value.

    • The chapter on 'Conducting Inquiry' includes a section on selecting a collaborative process and activities to scaffold learning. The section describes five approaches, illustrated by video clips from practice:
      • aligning beliefs with practice through problem-based methodology
      • learning from modelling by others
      • participating in role play
      • using a coach or mentor
      • working with a critical friend.
    • The Learning cases show inservice teacher educators using a version of the inquiry and knowledge-building cycle as they work to improve their own practice while simultaneously supporting others to inquire into and improve theirs.
    • School leaders may find the chapter ' Change for Improvement' useful for thinking about how to manage their communities through the discomfort and uncertainty of change. See, in particular, the suggested activity on page 176, which is based on a set of assumptions on educational change developed by Michael Fullan (2007).
    •  The chapter on ' Communication and Relationships' may help prompt thinking about the kinds of relationships necessary to bring about worthwhile change and how they can be created.

    This slim booklet is an excellent starting point for teachers in particular to understand ASD, how it impacts on learning, and how student learning can be fostered within the context and across the key competencies and learning areas of The New Zealand Curriculum.

    The booklet promotes a collaborative approach to fostering development in all the areas needed to become participating, contributing members of the community. It suggests practical strategies for engaging students in learning and for managing transitions.

    The 'Resources and tools' section of the Ministry's new website ASD in Education also has a PowerPoint presentation that can be used to introduce others to the concepts and ideas in the booklet.

    The Curriculum Update series is intended to support English-medium schools to implement the New Zealand Curriculum for all students. They are designed to encourage teachers and school leaders to examine ideas from research and their application to practice. Updates are succinct and illustrated by brief case studies. Links are provided to relevant research and tools.

    Several Curriculum Updates are particularly relevant to the themes of this website:

    • Updates 1 and 10 focus on school’s relationships, with families, whānau, and community
    • Update 16 addresses the Treaty of Waitangi principle and the concepts of partnership, protection, and participation

    This is the Ministry of Education’s core resource for anyone involved in developing or implementing individual education plans (IEPs) to support students with special education needs. While it is focused on the small number of individual students for whom an IEP is necessary, its messages are closely aligned to those of this website. Themes include the importance of collaboration, cultural responsiveness, and an inquiry approach. This resource would be useful as a catalyst for culture change when you are looking to improve your IEP process.

    You can find Collaboration for Success on IEP Online, aling with a rollout kit and other resources to support its implementation.

    Some of the information is for educators and boards of trustees, some for parents. It is organised under the following headings:

    The publications and resources are well worth exploring. Parents, for example, will be interested in the booklets on services, starting at primary and at secondary school, and on leaving school; the National Transition Guidelines; and the Family/Whānau File, which can be used for sharing information about their child as they grow up.
